The epic Road to Hana

Day 2 here on  Maui called for another early alarm as we wanted to get on the road to Hana as early as possible. We headed out from our place in Kihei around 6 am and were on the official route by 7. We decided to skip breakfast because a) we didn’t want to get up any earlier to eat at the cute Kihei cafe that opened at 5  and b) none of the restaurants in Paia were open before 7. So, we took some snacks and headed out. Our original thought was to do the road in reverse: drive all the way to our final destination without stopping and then head back down doing all the stops then. But, the road is so beautiful and so charming and it didn’t seem crowded, so when we hit our first stop of Twin Falls, we just went for it!

Twin Falls is a super quick little hike through some lush rainforest to two small waterfalls. Not super exciting, but easy.

Our next stop was to take some pics with the rainbow eucalyptus trees. These things are amazing!

Then, we stopped at Garden of Eden. It was $15 to get in, but totally worth it. First, it’s a chance to walk amongst all the various types of vegetation you see while driving. This was especially nice for Michael since it was harder for him to enjoy things being the driver on our journey. The other amazing thing about this place was there was a lookout for this rock in the ocean that was the opening scene of Jurassic Park. Amazing! Oh and we got some toasted banana bread at the food truck here.

Next up was lots more driving. We made it to our lunch spot too early, so we pressed on and stopped at Ka’eleku Caverns which is a cave formed from lava tubes. They gave you flashlights and let you explore on your own. It was great and we pretty much had the whole cave to ourselves. Afterwards
there was a sweet maze made of ti plants that was also full of spider webs....tons of them. But they gave us a sword to take care of those bad boys.

Next up was the Hana Farms Banana Bread stand! They sold all kinds of breads. We got the variety pack so we could try all the flavors: regular, pineapple, macadamia but, and chocolate chip. So yummy!

Next up was Wai’anapana State Park....the black sand beach. We were excited about this one and it was pretty spectacular. Not a beach to go and hang out and you’re not swimming in that water, but certainly beautiful.

After that we headed to Hana town. We had a yummy lunch at a Thainfood truck behind the ball park and then took a stroll through a field and along a sketchy path that led to Kaihalulu beach (the red sand beach). This place was amazing! We spent  little time here: swimming, trying out our snorkel sets, jumping off rocks. Good stuff. We had so much fun and were so excited about it Mike accidentally went into the ocean with our car keys in his swimming trunks pocket. Now, this could have been a disaster, but a) the key didn’t come out of his pocket and b) the car started since it had a pop out key that we inserted into the ignition. Unfortunately, we could no longer lock the car because the buttons wouldn’t work and sonemtimes the car wasn’t even starting because it couldn’t find the fob. While figuring out our plan, we were also on the hunt for first aid stuff as Michael had cut his toe on the rocks. We solved that problem with a trip to the general store and decided to do two more
stops on the road (two beaches) before we did the 2 hour drive back to civilization.

We took turns watching the car and checked out Hamoa beach and Koki beach. Both were fine...probably good beaches to hang out at for a day, but we weren’t excited about that at this point in our day anyways (car key issue or not).

We enjoyed our drive down and headed straight to the airport to fix the car. They were super nice and only charged us $75 for the key replacement (we thought it’d be $200 or more) and they switched out cars and gave us a new one. We will so miss that Beetle, but are happy they were so great.

After switching out the car, we still had to make it to our 7:45 dinner reservation at Mama’s Fish House. Fancy. But super delicious, fresh, flavorful fish dishes.

After dinner, Mike checked out a local dive bar and Ali went straight to sleep. Another great day in paradise.
