State #45: North Dakota

We started our morning by attempting to do a short run at Devils Tower. But, when we got to the trailhead it wasn’t really a run-suitable trail and there wasn’t time to walk it before breakfast, so we headed back and got cleaned up and packed. We had a yummy breakfast of pancakes, eggs, and fruit made by the BnB folks and we were on our way. First stop: prairie dog town in Devils Tower. So fun! I could watch those guys all day!

We then had about a 3.5-4 hour drive to get us to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We stopped for some Subway about a half hour before we arrived and were ready to tackle the park. One of the main roads in the park was closed, so after checking out the Visitor's Center and the cabin that Roosevelt used to live in, we just drove up to Wind Canyon Trail and then came back. We got to see tons of prairie dogs and some wild horses off in the distance. A nice park, but likely our least favorite of the trip. Just not anything spectacular. We also stopped at the Painted Canyon Visitor's center and did the little trail there.

After those two stops in the park, we drove to Dickinson to check into our hotel. We planned to have dinner at Wurst Stop, but their kitchen was closed. So we checked out the new brewery in town (Phat Fish) and then decided to drive to Medora for dinner before our show.

I drove to Medora and of course just as I got on the road it started hailing and crazy raining. Ridiculous! But, we made it and had a lovely dinner of flatbreads at a cute wine bar in Medora.

Then came the highlight of North Dakota, Medora the Musical. The venue is amazing! The show was so fun! Definitely recommend if you’re in the area! A great way to end our day
