Day 5: it's hard to know what stinks anymore and the hostel of pain

We began our day at 8am with a lovely breakfast of pancake w/ banana and honey and an omelette. It was a lovely way to start the day even though we were wearing our clothes from the previous day and used hand sanitizer or Glide for deodorant. Hence the phrase: it's hard to know what stinks anymore. :/

After breakfast our guide took us up to the hammock area and showed us all kinds of local produce. All of a sudden we were getting our faces painted with some dye from a fruit! Exciting! Then it was Peruvian photo booth time! Awesome!

After this we began our full day hike along various Incan trails. We hiked for about 2 hours. It was magical! Full of butterflies and waterfalls. There was even a flock of green parrots. Great stuff! Then we rested on some hammocks for about an hour before lunch. More Peruvian food. Always rice. Always potatoes.

Then it was off for another 2 or so hours of hiking including a crazy bridge and what our guide kept calling a cable car. This was no cable car and I'm pretty sure I thought we were going to die. No worries. Michael rescued us!

After the cable car fiasco, we arrived at a beautiful got springs and enjoyed some relaxation time in the water before having a lovely half glass of wine overlooking the springs. We even saw our other Texas friends there! Crazy small world coincidences.

The but was one more 45 minute walk to our hostel in Santa Theresa. And a few more stairs. I hate stairs. Here's my reaction:

Once we arrived, we were so happy to see our bag! Clean clothes! Soap! Toothbrushes! Deodorant!

Unfortunately, that's where the goodness of that place ended. Hostel Santa Theresa was worse than monkey house and we're now calling it the hostel of pain. We did have our own bathroom, but it was so small you could barely sit down on the toilet. Also, the bed was horrid! So hard! And terrible pillows and sheets! And it was loud! Like an echo chamber. All night. Oh and then at 4am or so there was a cat fight. Michael didn't get much sleep with all that commotion and Alison just got a little.

Regardless, we had another great day! And we were ready for our next day of adventures.

  1. Yay, you got your bags!! Love the painted faces! I hate stairs too, Alison, especially so many of them. Surprised Michael didn't carry you up the stairs. If you two can survive 2 days together in same clothes, etc., you can survive anything. Estoy ansioso por ver lo que nos espera a continuaciĆ³n. (Am anxious to see what awaits us next.)

  2. You two look adorable in your Peruvian attire and the painted faces - especially against the banana trees! Those mountains and water are beautiful! So glad you received your big bag with all the essentials!

  3. Fun pictures! Good hygiene is nice. In your recent trips, it does not always seem like an option. :)
