Day 6: All the Belgian yummy stuff

We woke up bright and early again today (we'll need some sleep when we get home!) to catch a 7:15 bus to Brussels. We were in Brussels by 10, dropped our bags and headed out for our first (of many) Belgian waffles. This one was covered in chocolate sauce and acquired at Maison Dandoy. We strolled over to the Grand Place to eat our waffle and enjoy the sights. A beautiful collection of buildings! Very Euro. Then, we strolled over and saw the pissing mannequin statue. Apparently it's a thing to do and every shop in town has something shaped like this statue. Not sure why people love it so much, but we got our pic there like everyone else.

Now it was museum time. We checked out the Brussels Comic Book Museum. They had some great
stuff about the Smurfs and all kinds of other Belgian comics I didn't know. But they also had some
great exhibits on the process of making comics and that was great too.

Then it was time to meet up w/ some Austin friends who were also in Brussels. We took a bus to the Flagey area and first got some Belgian fries before we met up with Lornic and Melissa for some really amazing pizza at Mamma Roma. I took pictures of all this yummy food, but forgot to take a pic of all of us together! Ridiculous!!!

Then it was off to the Musical Instruments museum. It was really well done. You had a little audio guide and could listen to the different instruments. They had over 8000 different ones and a great section on instruments created by Adolph Sax. Lots of cool sax hybrid type things that I loved seeing.

We both also really enjoyed these two crazy modern pianos that had videos of people playing them. So cool!

Now for a real adventure. About one hour on transit to the Atomium and Mini-Europe. We loved both of these! So ridiculous, but so fun. We'd recommend them both.

Once we got back into town we took a little rest and headed to dinner at a little cafe where we had a not so great duck burger, but some really yummy mussels....another Belgian treasure! Then, we checked out two famous beer bars (Moeder Lambic and Delirium) and got to try some of the Belgian beers. They even have yummy fruity stuff that tastes like juice that Alison enjoyed! Fun for all. We may have picked up another waffle on our way home. :)

Smurfs in the ice cream at the place we got our waffle!

  1. This looked like a fun-filled day! The pancakes are to die for! Also liked that mini-Europe! You got to see all the sights in one place! Reminded me of the place in the Netherlands that we visited when you were children! The Atomium looks interesting! I will have to look it up and read about it. Need to add Brussels to our travel list! Another great day!
