Portugal Day 2: Douro Valley Wine Adventure: Sips, Scenic Cruises, and Culinary Delights

The day began with a visit to a local bakery, where we savored some treats and beverages. Fueled and ready, we joined a guided bus tour that would take us on a tour of the Douro Valley's wine country.

Our first stop was the Quinta dos Castelares winery, reached after a scenic two-hour drive. Here, we indulged in a variety of wine tastings. Next, our  wine exploration continued at Casa Dos Barros winery in Sabrosa, where we enjoyed more local wines and a Portuguese lunch. Notably, this charming town, Sabrosa, happened to be the hometown of Ferdinand Magellan. Following lunch, a Port tasting added an extra layer of richness to our experience.

We then took the bus to Pinhão where we hopped on a boat to cruise along the picturesque riverbanks of the Douro, which was  adorned with vineyards. Following the board cruise, we returned to Porto. Upon our return, our paths diverged—Alison devoted some time to work, while Michael and Linda embarked on a shopping excursion. In their explorations, they stumbled upon a cozy craft beer bar, where Michael delighted in a flight of regional brews and Linda enjoyed some local wine.

As the day drew to a close, we convened for dinner at Onze, where we enjoyed elevated Portuguese cuisine. It was the perfect culmination of a day filled with flavors and sights. Satisfied and content, we retreated to our hotel for a good night’s rest.
