Reykjavík adventures!

We all slept well after our day of travel and were ready to enjoy Iceland!

Mike and I walked over to pickup the rental car at 8AM and when we got back we all got ready for our first day. Note: getting the rental car was the best idea! It was so great to just be able to go anywhere we wanted at any time. And driving in Iceland was super easy! We used MyCar and really loved our hybrid and our experience with them.

As we headed into the city we stopped at a bakery and loaded up on all the yummies! So good!

Our first stop: the Perlan Museum. This was a nice way to introduce ourselves to the city. We learned about volcanoes, explored the ice cave, got 365 degree views of the city, and Romi even squeezed in the planetarium show!

After this it was down to the city for our food tour! Note: we parked in a garage that required a parking app. Just be ready to have one of those downloaded and ready to pay! The first 15 minutes of the tour was me figuring out how to pay to park! We spent 3 hours strolling around the city eating all sorts of yummy things and learning more about Iceland and Reykjavík.

First stop: Fjallkonan for some slow cooked lamb and lightly cured Arctic char bites. Both were delicious!

Second stop: Messin. Baked Arctic char and fish mash. Again, both were delicious!! Not sure I could pick a favorite here.

Third stop: Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur. Icelandic hot dogs! The line was too long so we got coupons and came back for this later. See later in this post.

Fourth stop: Íslenski Barinn. Pub for fermented shark, lamb soup, and Icelandic beer. The soup was delicious, Michael enjoyed his beer, and we all tried the shark and decided it wasn’t terrible.

Last stop: Café Loki for Icelandic donut and rye bread ice cream. The donut was not great, but I liked the ice cream a lot!

A really nice way to orient ourselves to the city. We definitely would recommend!

Next up we checked into our Airbnb and Romi took a nap while Mike and I went back to retrieve our free hot dogs! We had to wait in line about 30 minutes, but they were playing the Mamma Mia soundtrack so that was a fun connection to our previous trip! We finally  got our dogs and thought they were delicious. Cooked and fried onions on the bottom, ketchup, mustard, and remolaude. Yummy!

I headed back to our Airbnb to pick up Romi and Mike checked out some beer bars. Romi and I went shopping for road-trip snacks, looked for a spare bag for Mike to check on his way home (no luck) and stopped at Omnom chocolate.

After we got back to the Airbnb, we walked down to the city for some pre-dinner tea at Cafe Rosenberg while Michael took a nap. Then, we all reunited at 8pm for a very long (kitchen was slow), but most delicious sushi dinner at Fish Market. It was all delicious!

A successful first day in the city!
