Travel days and the trip that almost wasn’t.

Our last full day in Greece was a bit more relaxed. We got up around 8 and headed to the hotel’s free breakfast. They had lots of great outdoor seating to enjoy all our treasures.

We took our time packing and took a 10am taxi back to the city of Volos to catch our bus. Mike picked up some snacks from the supermarket and we got on our bus to Athens. It was a 4ish hr bus ride, so lots of naptime, some book reading and lots of looking at the scenery. We took a short break about halfway through at a cafe for restrooms and snacks. Once we got to Athens we used Uber taxi to get to our Airbnb by the airport. It was a huge 2 bedroom apartment! Lots of space!

Once we checked in we took an Uber taxi to the nearby beach for dinner at Arhontikon and gelato. We got to eat right along the water and it was a great way to spend our last night. After dinner we took a stroll down the beach to get gelato. :)

We had early flights the next morning but we got there with plenty of time to spare! No trouble with long lines at the airports we’ve been to. Anna boarded her flight to Paris (and then to Atlanta and then Lexington) first and then Michael and I took a flight to Milan a couple hours later.

A few reflections about our trip: we appreciated Anna slowing us down sometimes. It was nice to walk a litttle slower, take in the scenery and just enjoy. We often move so fast we forget to look around us. Anna is a trooper! We had a lot of early mornings and she never complained and was always awake and ready to go on time! Michael and I love some crazy food…but Anna reminded us that sometimes a bowl of spaghetti or some chicken nuggets are all you need to make you happy. Anna is a lover of bread…same, Anna, same. We didn’t find the right spot for Anna to get her travel tattoo, but I was impressed with her ability to ask these guys at a tattoo shop if they had time to fit her in on our last day (they did not). Athens was no one’s favorite. It just was too busy, too hot, and not that fun. If we were to ever do Greece again we’d focus on the islands. Those are fantastic!

Once we got to Milan we had 6 hours to kill. We checked our bags at luggage storage at the airport and took the train into Milan to get pizza at Pizzeria Da Zero and see the Duomo. Both were amazing!

We hurried back to make sure we had plenty of time to get through security and once we got through we saw our flight was delayed by 3 hours (now departing at 8pm). So, lots of time was spent in the Milan lounge. Around 8pm I got an email and text that said our flight to Iceland had been cancelled. Panic ensued. The WizzAir app was not letting me rebook. So, we decided to leave security and see if we could get in the WizzAir line to find out options. Once we got there the lines were insane, so we started doing research. The only other flight to Iceland that day was on IcelandAir and it was fully booked. WizzAir wasn’t flying there again until Wednesday. We found two flights that would get us there at 12:50am on Monday going through Madrid. We were about ready to book these when we heard cheering from the WizzAir ticket counter. It turns out the email/texts were a mistake!!! The flight was still on!!  We all rushed through security and we eventually got to Iceland (4 hours delayed). But, it worked out perfectly because a Romi landed 10 minutes before us so we all shared a taxi to our airport Airbnb. A stressful few moments and a very long day of travel made all of the trip that was to come that much sweeter!
